Low Level Laser Therapy

Low level laser therapy (LLLT) involves the application of laser or LED light to improve tissue repair, reduce pain and reduce inflammation.  Many musculoskeletal ailments (back pain, knee pain, arthritis, nerve pain etc.) are mediated through inflammation and tissue trauma.  Low level laser therapy work through at mechanism that help reduce those components.

LLLT works primarily on a specific aspect of our cells known as the mitochondria.  Mitochondria are found in almost every cell in the body and are responsible for producing energy (or ATP), cell growth and cell-to-cell signaling.

When LLLT is applied to an area, a protein in the mitochondria (cytochrome oxidase c) is up regulated, which in turn facilitates an increase in ATP production (cellular energy) and a decrease in oxidative stress in that area.

This mechanism of action is important because any time there is injury, inflammation, or tissue damage, our cells need extra energy and antioxidants to heal.

Low level laser therapy is a painless, non-invasive and fast therapy that can improve pain, inflammation and function.

Common clinical conditions that LLLT can be helpful for:

  • Acute of chronic tendinopathy

  • Sprains or strains

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Arthritis

  • Post-operative pain

  • Nerve pain
